Aging adults fall more frequently than younger adults due to a multitude of factors. Knowing what these are can help prevent painful and costly injuries — promoting freedom to move with confidence and strength.
Fall Facts
According to the CDC, falls among adults aged 65 and older are common, costly, and preventable. Falls are the leading cause of fatal and nonfatal injuries among older adults.
Why do elders fall?
- Changes in physiology
- Vision loss
- Diminishing strength
- Diminished sensation
- Decreased bone density
- Memory loss
- Illness or injuries
- Medication side effects
- Bowel & bladder changes
- Environmental hazards: poor lighting, loose rugs, ill-fitting footwear, clutter, pets, electrical cords, spills
Though there are many causes of falls in the elder population, there are also many simple strategies to prevent them. As we age, our abilities change too. Falls don't need to be part of the process.
Strategies in Prevention
Keep Active
According to a National Institute of Health 2021 study, exercise programs reduce the rate of falls and the number of people experiencing falls in older people living in the community (Sherrington, et al. 2021).
Physical Activity
- Engage in movement that brings you joy. Join a local activity group or class — examples include Tai Chi, dance, and golf. This not only keeps you moving but connects you with others.
- Dance and play with your grandkids.
- Join your local gym, pool, senior center, or community college. Many of these have free or discounted programs for seniors.
- Go for a walk. Make a walking date with your dog or a neighbor.
- Gardening.
- Explore new technologies for movement, like virtual reality.
Mental Activity
- Read or listen to audiobooks
- Do puzzles
- Play music
- Join a support group, elder circle, or library
- Create something — cooking, baking, woodworking, crafting
- Keep a daily calendar or journal
- Memorize important phone numbers, dates, addresses, and songs
- Learn something new
Be patient with yourself. Be consistent. Practice each day. Notice the changes. Adapt when needed. Get others to join in.
"Strength grows in the moments when you think you can't go on but keep going anyway."
